A nebula is an enormous cloud of dust and gas occupying the space between stars and acting as a nursery for new stars and planets.
The root of the word comes from Latin nebula, which means a “mist, vapor, fog, smoke, exhalation.”
Nebulae are made up of dust, basic elements such as hydrogen and other ionized gases. They either form through clouds of cold interstellar gas and dust or through the aftermath of a supernova. These gases, predominantly hydrogen and helium, are often energized by nearby stars, emitting light that contributes to their colorful displays.
Nebulae come in various forms, including emission nebulae (like the famous Orion Nebula), reflection nebulae (like the Pleiades), and planetary nebulae (like the Ring Nebula). Each type has distinct characteristics.
Nebulae can vary greatly in size, from small clouds stretching a few light-years across to vast structures extending hundreds or thousands of light-years.
Some nebulae result from dying stars shedding their outer layers, leaving behind breathtaking remnants known as planetary nebulae, showcasing intricate patterns and shapes.
