You've always had the power my dear. You just had to learn it for yourself.
- Glinda, Wizard of Oz
(In making successful films), No matter how easy it looks on the outside it’s a very difficult struggle. With most people you don’t see the struggle aspect of a person’s life you only see the success they’ve had. But I haven’t met anybody that hasn’t been able to describe years and years and years of of very difficult struggle through the whole process of achieving anything. The secret is to not give up hope and it’s very hard not to. Because if you’re really doing something worthwhile you will be pushed to the brink of hopelessness before you come out of the other side. My first 6 years in the business was hopeless. Lots of times I asked myself “Why am I doing this? I’ll never make it.” It took me years for me to get my first film off the ground. Most of the films I’ve made haven’t worked. 40% of my films have successful. That’s a very high percentage next to most people who maybe have 10-15% work.
- George Lucas
It’s not what we get that makes us happy, it’s who we become, and what we’re able to give because of what we become. And it’s this sense of contribution that creates the deepest meaning.
- Tony Robbins
If you cannot do great things, do small things in a great way.
- Napoleon Hill
The artist is born damned and struggles with his/her life to achieve an ever elusive redemption by way of art. A sense of one’s incompleteness or inadequacy fuels the instinct for ceaseless invention.
